The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide heatwave alert, warning that temperatures in several districts could rise above 50°C during the coming days. Officials stated that intense heat conditions will continue from today until May 11, affecting large parts of Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab.
According to the PMD, districts including Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Sibi, Turbat, and Panjgur are expected to record temperatures between 46°C and 50°C. Meteorologists warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat could create dangerous conditions for residents across these regions.
Meanwhile, southern Punjab will also experience unusually high temperatures. Authorities forecast that Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan may record temperatures ranging from 43°C to 47°C during the ongoing heatwave.
Northern and central cities also face rising temperatures
The PMD alert further indicated that northern and central parts of the country will not remain unaffected. Cities including Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Sialkot are likely to experience temperatures between 39°C and 43°C over the next several days.
In Karachi, weather experts predicted that maximum temperatures would remain between 35°C and 38°C. However, humidity levels may increase discomfort for residents in the coastal city.
Health experts urge precautionary measures
Medical specialists and meteorologists have advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. They also stressed the importance of drinking plenty of water and limiting outdoor activities whenever possible.
Furthermore, authorities recommended that vulnerable individuals, including children, elderly citizens, and outdoor workers, remain indoors to reduce the risk of heatstroke and dehydration as temperatures continue rising nationwide.
