Pakistan has overtaken Vietnam in monthly rice exports, strengthening its position in the global rice market despite rising shipping costs and regional trade disruptions.
Official trade figures show that Pakistan exported 420,000 tonnes of rice in September 2026, compared with Vietnam’s 337,000 tonnes.
The achievement brings Pakistan closer to its ambition of becoming the world’s third-largest rice exporter.
Pakistan Earns Higher Prices Than Vietnam
Pakistan also secured better export prices during September.
Pakistani exporters earned an average of $621 per tonne, while Vietnam received $563 per tonne.
The price advantage reflects strong international demand for Pakistan’s premium Basmati rice and other varieties.
Global Basmati trade remained stable at 6.9 million tonnes despite geopolitical tensions.
Rice Exports Rise 51% Despite Global Crisis
Industry expert Hamid Malik said Pakistan first surpassed Vietnam’s monthly export volume in December 2025.
The country maintained strong performance despite disruptions linked to the US-Iran conflict.
Higher freight charges, expensive marine insurance and delayed shipments increased pressure on exporters.
Nevertheless, Pakistan recorded a 51% increase in rice export volumes during the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year.
Foreign exchange earnings also increased by 37%.
What Is Driving Pakistan’s Rice Export Growth?
Malik attributed the improvement to larger rice cultivation areas and sufficient carry-over stocks.
Rice plantation acreage expanded by approximately 18% to 20%.
Improved fertilizer availability and agricultural financing also supported production.
Unlike some competing markets, Pakistan’s rice industry operates without government-backed freight subsidies or minimum support prices.
Despite these challenges, exporters have maintained their international competitiveness.
However, sustaining this performance will remain essential as Pakistan attempts to secure a stronger position in global rice trade.
