ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Oman have signed six agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen bilateral cooperation across several sectors, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi in Islamabad.
The agreements were exchanged on Wednesday during the eighth session of the Pakistan-Oman Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC), which the two foreign ministers co-chaired. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the signing ceremony.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Omani counterpart signed the protocol documenting the commission’s meeting, an agreement on mutual visa exemption for diplomatic, special, official and service passport holders, and an MoU on records and archives.
The remaining three MoUs cover information and broadcasting, information technology and telecommunications, and news exchange and media cooperation. Relevant Pakistani federal ministers signed these documents.
During his meeting with the Omani delegation, Shehbaz highlighted the countries’ longstanding relationship, supported by shared religious and cultural ties, geographical proximity, and centuries of people-to-people exchanges.
He described Oman as an important maritime neighbour and a valuable regional partner. Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the joint commission would provide a foundation for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.
Both sides also discussed regional and international developments. Shehbaz appreciated Oman’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes, while Sayyid Badr acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions and promote peaceful solutions.
The agreements reflect Islamabad and Muscat’s commitment to strengthening institutional ties and expanding cooperation across multiple fields.
