Pakistan and the Maldives have agreed to strengthen educational ties through a series of academic partnerships involving five Pakistani universities and the Maldives National University (MNU). The agreements aim to expand research opportunities, improve academic cooperation and encourage exchanges between students and faculty members.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan facilitated the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between MNU and the participating Pakistani institutions. The ceremony took place at the HEC Secretariat during the three-day state visit of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to Pakistan.
Which Five Pakistani Universities Signed the Agreements?
The academic partnership connects the Maldives National University with five Pakistani institutions:
- National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST)
- PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi
- University of Wah
- Government College University Lahore
- Foundation University Islamabad
MNU Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam signed the agreements alongside representatives of the Pakistani universities. Through these MoUs, the institutions intend to develop academic links and explore opportunities for long-term cooperation.
What Will the Pakistan-Maldives Academic Pact Cover?
The agreements focus on several areas of collaboration, including joint and dual degree programmes, collaborative research, faculty exchanges and student mobility. They also aim to encourage knowledge sharing between universities in both countries.
These initiatives could create opportunities for students and researchers to work with international academic partners. Moreover, joint research projects, conferences and seminars can help participating institutions share expertise and strengthen professional connections.
HEC Chairman Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar highlighted the potential of closer academic relations between Pakistan and the Maldives. He encouraged universities to pursue joint research and organise academic events to build stronger institutional partnerships.
Which Research Areas Will Receive Attention?
MNU Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam welcomed the HEC initiative and identified several potential areas for cooperation. These include postgraduate research, agriculture, food sciences, tourism and hospitality, marine sciences, environmental sustainability and climate change.
The proposed areas cover subjects relevant to both countries, particularly those involving environmental challenges, food systems and coastal resources. However, the agreements establish a framework for cooperation rather than confirming specific research projects or degree programmes.
HEC Highlights Long-Term Educational Cooperation
Adviser Global Engagement at HEC, Dr. Muhammad Ali Nasir, emphasised the importance of building sustainable international partnerships. He described the agreements as a step towards expanding educational opportunities and fostering lasting people-to-people connections between Pakistan and the Maldives.
The partnership provides a basis for the participating universities to explore academic initiatives and exchange expertise. Its future impact will depend on how the institutions develop and implement joint programmes, research activities and exchange opportunities.
With five Pakistani universities now linked to MNU through these agreements, both countries have established a framework for closer educational engagement. The collaboration seeks to strengthen academic ties while creating further opportunities for students, faculty members and researchers.
