Pakistan and Iraq have reaffirmed their joint resolve to combat terrorism, extremism, and narcotics trafficking.
The commitment emerged during high-level talks in Baghdad between President Asif Ali Zardari and Iraqi President Dr Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid. Both leaders described the meeting as timely and constructive.
The discussion took place at the Baghdad Palace. It focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and security sectors. As a result, both sides expressed satisfaction over improving diplomatic momentum.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
President Zardari highlighted recent progress in Pakistan-Iraq relations. He referred to high-level engagements and parliamentary exchanges. Moreover, he welcomed the outcomes of the Pakistan-Iraq Joint Ministerial Commission session.
The president reaffirmed Pakistanโs support for Iraqโs sovereignty and unity. He also reiterated Pakistanโs commitment to Iraqโs stability and democratic progress. Additionally, he congratulated Iraqi leadership on successful parliamentary elections.
Expanding Economic and Trade Cooperation
President Zardari noted that bilateral trade remains below its true potential. Therefore, he encouraged greater cooperation in trade and investment. He identified agriculture, defence production, and construction as priority sectors.
He also highlighted opportunities in information technology and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of business-to-business engagement. Direct banking channels, he said, would ease commercial activity.
Support for Reconstruction and Capacity Building
Pakistan reiterated its willingness to support Iraqโs reconstruction efforts. The president referred to skilled and semi-skilled manpower cooperation under an existing agreement. He also highlighted Pakistanโs strengths in medical services and financial expertise.
In addition, he expressed readiness to share experience in digital governance. Secure data management and institutional capacity building also featured in discussions.
Focus on Pilgrim Facilitation and Legal Compliance
President Zardari urged Iraqi authorities to improve facilities for Pakistani pilgrims. He expressed hope for early implementation of the proposed Zaireen Management agreement.The initiative aims to ensure smooth and organized religious travel.
ย At the same time, he stressed respect for Iraqi laws. He reaffirmed Pakistanโs resolve to prevent illegal entry and overstays by Pakistani nationals.
Shared Regional and Global Outlook
Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across all domains. They also pledged coordination at regional and multilateral forums. These include the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
The Iraqi president appreciated Pakistanโs role in promoting Muslim unity. He also acknowledged Pakistanโs historical support for Palestine.
Earlier, President Zardari received a guard of honour. Formal talks followed, along with a luncheon hosted by the Iraqi president.
