Security officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan failed to reach an agreement on reopening the Torkham border during talks on Sunday, though both sides expressed optimism that the issue could be resolved within the week.
According to official sources at Torkham, border security officials from both countries met at Zero Point around midday, with each side presenting their positions. The discussions focused on respecting previous protocols regarding any changes to the existing border structure.
Pakistan reportedly showed willingness to reopen the crossing, but Afghan officials requested additional time to consult with their higher authorities.
In anticipation of a breakthrough, customs and immigration staff were called to duty on Sunday, but they were later sent home after talks ended without an agreement.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Afghans seeking to return home gathered near the border, waiting in vain for its reopening. Local youth organisations provided Iftar meals for the stranded Afghans at Torkham and Landi Kotal.
Officials said they are now waiting for a positive response from Afghan authorities before taking further action.
