Tough Opponent
Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has made it clear that his team will not underestimate Pakistan, despite the host nationโs recent patchy performances.
Speaking to the media in Lahore ahead of the T20I series, Simmons emphasized the dangerous potential of the Pakistani side and reiterated the importance of approaching the series with full seriousness and preparation.
โPakistan is a dangerous side, and we are not going to take them lightly,โ said Simmons. While many critics have pointed out Pakistanโs inconsistent form in recent months, the seasoned coach was quick to remind everyone of the team’s capabilities. โEveryone is saying Pakistan hasnโt been playing well, but Pakistan is still Pakistan โ they have the ability to beat anyone,โ he remarked, highlighting the respect his team holds for their opponents.
Simmons also expressed optimism about his squadโs chances in the series, despite missing several key players. He acknowledged the challenges that come with an incomplete roster but framed it as a positive opportunity for emerging talent. โWhen senior players are unavailable, it creates opportunities for youngsters. Often, one of them turns out to be a great find,โ he said. Notably, the team will be without experienced pacer Mustafizur Rahman, whose absence Simmons described as significant.
To counter the challenge of unfamiliar playing conditions, the coach revealed that some players who have participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have shared valuable information about local pitches and environments. โSome of our players have featured in the PSL, and theyโve provided helpful information about the conditions here,โ he noted.
Despite the setbacks, Simmons projected confidence in his squadโs readiness and spirit. โWe will miss our key players, but we are determined to put up a strong performance with the current squad,โ he affirmed.
He also spoke warmly about his personal ties to Pakistan, calling the country a โspecial placeโ and recalling fond memories of playing there during his cricketing career. On the coaching front, Simmons welcomed former Australian fast bowler Shaun Taitโs inclusion in the support staff, stating that his experience would be valuable to the teamโs development.
As the team continues its training at Gaddafi Stadium, players are engaged in batting, bowling, and fielding drills under the watchful eyes of the coaching staff. Fitness sessions and rest days for those involved in the PSL 10 final have also been integrated into the preparation schedule.
All three T20Is in the series will be played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on May 28, May 30, and June 1.
