Pakistan has inaugurated its first-ever ferry service connecting Karachi with Chabahar Port in Iran. The new initiative marks a historic milestone in regional maritime transport. The federal government described it as a significant step for tourism and the blue economy.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry officially launched the ferry terminal at Karachi Port Trust. He highlighted that the service fulfills his vision of modern, safe, and sustainable maritime passenger transport in Pakistan. According to the minister, this initiative will enhance connectivity and create economic opportunities across the region.
The ferry service is set to begin operations in the third week of January. Each trip can carry up to 240 passengers, with journeys expected to take 12 to 14 hours. The service will operate three round trips per week, with a round-trip ticket priced at Rs50,000 per passenger.
The minister emphasized that the project aligns with the Prime Ministerโs focus on unlocking the potential of Pakistanโs blue economy. He explained that the ferry is more than a transport facility; it is a gateway to economic growth, tourism promotion, and regional cooperation. This is also Pakistanโs first ferry license issued in the countryโs history.
Officials noted that the ferry terminal will boost investor confidence and strengthen private sector participation. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, along with related agencies, is working to improve infrastructure, implement policy reforms, and create public-private partnerships. The aim is to maximize contributions to Pakistanโs maritime and coastal economy.
Several business leaders have shown interest in obtaining ferry service licenses. Authorities expect that private sector involvement will expand maritime tourism and generate employment in transport, hospitality, and allied industries. The minister encouraged innovative proposals and assured investors of full government facilitation.
Additionally, the Port Qasim Authority plans to introduce a state-of-the-art industrial zone. This zone is expected to provide modern infrastructure for investors, boost industrial activity, and increase exports while complementing port-led development.
The inauguration ceremony included senior officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Karachi Port Trust management, and representatives from the shipping and business sectors. They praised the ferry service as a transformative project to revitalize Pakistanโs maritime sector and unlock the untapped potential of coastal and marine resources.
