Yemen’s government has reported that more than 200 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded during intense clashes in Taiz province, southwestern Yemen.
According to the Taiz Military Axis, fighting intensified on Wednesday across several front lines, including Dhubab, west of Taiz, and Al-Aqrud and Al-Shaqab to the south. The confrontations began in the morning and escalated significantly by the afternoon.
Government forces said supporting warplanes targeted a Houthi convoy of tanks and military vehicles in the Ras al-Najd area of Al-Misrakh district. Additional air strikes reportedly hit positions near Sofitel Hill, east of Taiz, and destroyed military equipment along the Dhubab front.
The military command reported that the operations destroyed a military vehicle, damaged two tanks, neutralised an armed convoy and brought down a drone. However, the casualty figures and battlefield claims have not been independently verified.
The offensive forms part of the government’s “Dawn of Yemen” campaign, launched earlier this month to recapture territory controlled by the Houthis, including the capital, Sanaa. The operation has received support from a Saudi-led coalition.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s government has urged the United Nations and the Security Council to intervene and lift the Houthi blockade of Taiz.
Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba warned that the siege and escalating violence threaten a humanitarian catastrophe affecting more than four million people in the city and surrounding districts.
The latest escalation highlights the continuing military and humanitarian challenges facing Yemen as efforts to restore government control intensify.
