ISLAMABAD: More than 1.87 million Pakistanis moved abroad over the past three years, highlighting the growing trend of overseas migration for employment and better economic opportunities, the National Assembly has been informed.
The figures were shared with the lower house of Parliament in response to a question concerning Pakistanis leaving the country. The data reflects continued demand for foreign employment as workers seek improved wages, career prospects and financial stability.
Official employment records show that Saudi Arabia remains the leading destination for Pakistani workers, followed by other Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman. These markets offer opportunities in construction, transportation, technical services and other sectors.
Overseas employment also plays a significant role in Pakistan’s economy. Workers send billions of dollars in remittances annually, supporting household incomes and contributing to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
However, the continuing outflow of workers has raised concerns about retaining skilled professionals and strengthening employment opportunities at home. Economists have repeatedly highlighted the importance of creating sustainable jobs, improving salaries and expanding vocational training.
The government has pursued initiatives to promote overseas employment while improving workers’ access to international labour markets. Authorities have also emphasised the need for safer migration channels and stronger protections against recruitment fraud.
The latest figures underline the importance of balancing overseas employment opportunities with domestic economic development to retain talent and expand job prospects within Pakistan.
