A teacher confronted an armed teenage gunman during a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, risking her life to protect students and prevent further casualties.
The shooting occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School on October 15, when a 16-year-old suspect entered a special-needs classroom and opened fire. The teacher reportedly threw her cellphone at the attacker before tackling him and struggling to gain control of his shotgun.
Teacher Confronts Gunman During Deadly Attack
Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the teacher for confronting the shooter despite the danger. Her actions helped protect the children in her classroom, although the attack still claimed several lives.
The suspect, identified as Griffin J. John II, had previously attended the school as a special-needs student. Investigators said he fired approximately 15 rounds inside the classroom before the confrontation unfolded.
The shooting killed three children, aged five, eight and eleven, along with 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. Another child and a teacher also sustained injuries during the incident.
Father Intervenes Before Police Arrive
A father whose daughters attended the school also confronted the gunman after witnessing him firing at a vehicle outside the campus. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, followed the suspect into the building and shot him while the teacher struggled to control the weapon.
Police arrived within minutes of receiving the emergency call and found the gunman dead. Authorities praised the teacher and the father for their efforts to protect others during the attack.
Meanwhile, investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and how the teenager obtained the shotgun. Officials had not established a definitive motive for the attack.
The tragedy left families and residents mourning the victims, while the community began supporting those affected by the violence. Furthermore, the incident renewed concerns about school safety and the need to protect children and staff from armed attacks.
