Different parties pursue separate demonstrations while demanding minister’s resignation
NEW DELHI: Opposition parties and protest groups continued separate demonstrations across New Delhi on Tuesday, highlighting divisions within the broader campaign seeking the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the ongoing examination controversy.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continued their protest at Jantar Mantar, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Congress lawmakers staged a separate demonstration outside the prime minister’s official residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Meanwhile, reports indicated that the Samajwadi Party shifted its support from the AAP-led protest to the Congress demonstration.
Although the groups share the common demand for Pradhan’s resignation, they have pursued separate protest strategies rather than organising a unified movement.
Student movement faces strategic choices
The parallel demonstrations have prompted debate over whether a divided opposition campaign could weaken pressure on the government. Some political observers argue that multiple protest venues may dilute the movement’s visibility, while others believe the separate demonstrations reflect differing political approaches rather than disagreement over the central demand.
Meanwhile, student participation remains a key factor in the protests. Reports from the protest sites indicate that organisers have continued providing logistical support, including meals and other facilities, to demonstrators participating in the sit-ins.
Government yet to signal policy change
Despite sustained protests and calls from opposition parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government has not indicated that it intends to seek the education minister’s resignation.
Political analysts say the effectiveness of the campaign may depend on whether student groups consolidate behind a single platform or continue participating in multiple demonstrations across the capital.
As the protests continue, attention remains focused on the government’s response and whether continued public pressure will result in political or administrative action. For now, demonstrators from different organisations remain united in their demand for accountability but divided in how they are
