New Visa Category Takes Effect After Legal Amendment
Oman has introduced a free 14-day tourist visa under new amendments to the country’s Foreigners’ Residence Law regulations.
The decision was published in Oman’s Official Gazette on August 2, 2026. It took effect the following day.
The amendment formally adds the complimentary 14-day permit as a separate tourist visa category. No application fee will be charged.
The visa may be granted upon application to citizens of countries approved by the relevant Omani authority. Travellers must also meet the conditions established by immigration officials.
The measure aims to make short visits easier and support the continued growth of Oman’s tourism industry.
However, the new visa is not automatically available to every international traveller. Visitors should confirm their eligibility through the Royal Oman Police eVisa platform before booking their journey.
Visitors Can Switch to Another Tourist Visa
The new rules provide greater flexibility for tourists who decide to remain in Oman for more than 14 days.
A traveller may apply to replace the free visa with another eligible tourist visa before the original permit expires.
The applicant must meet the requirements of the new visa category. Standard charges will also apply to the replacement visa.
This process is different from simply extending the complimentary permit. Travellers must complete a new application and receive approval from the relevant authorities.
The latest category is also separate from Oman’s existing 14-day visa-exemption programme. That programme currently covers visitors from more than 100 countries and regions.
The existing exemption requires travellers to hold a passport valid for at least six months. They must also have a return ticket, confirmed accommodation, health insurance and sufficient funds.
Under the existing exemption rules, the 14-day stay cannot be extended or converted into a residence visa.
Visitors are therefore advised to carefully check which entry route applies to their nationality and travel plans.
New Measure Supports Oman’s Tourism Expansion
Oman has increasingly promoted itself as a major cultural and nature-based tourism destination.
Visitors can explore Muscat’s historic sites, the Hajar Mountains, desert landscapes and the country’s extensive coastline.
The announcement also comes during the 2026 Khareef Dhofar season. The annual monsoon transforms Salalah and surrounding areas into green landscapes with mist, rainfall and cooler temperatures.
The 2026 season runs from June 21 until September 21. It includes 125 cultural, artistic, sporting and entertainment events across Dhofar Governorate.
Popular attractions include waterfalls, mountain viewpoints, beaches, natural springs and heritage locations.
The free visa could encourage more travellers to consider Oman for short holidays, business visits and regional stopovers.
It may also help hotels, airlines, tour operators and local businesses attract additional international customers.
