Global oil prices have climbed to nearly $110 per barrel for the first time since May, raising concerns about energy supplies. The sharp increase reflects escalating tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty surrounding Russia’s ability to supply diesel to international markets.
Brent crude futures settled at $109.86 per barrel on Friday, October 16, marking a 3.7% increase. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 3.5% to $101.41 per barrel, its highest level since September 17.
Middle East Tensions Fuel Supply Concerns
Rising tensions across the Middle East have intensified fears of further disruptions to global oil shipments. In particular, increased attacks around the Strait of Hormuz have reduced crude oil flows from the Gulf region.
Additionally, reports of possible threats to Saudi energy infrastructure have encouraged traders to purchase oil amid concerns about tighter supplies. A Saudi-led coalition also reported intercepting a ballistic missile targeting Yanbu, a strategically important Red Sea port.
The developments have increased uncertainty across energy markets. Consequently, Brent crude gained 4.9% during the week, while WTI recorded a stronger weekly increase of 10.4%.
Russian Refinery Attacks Add Market Pressure
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s renewed attacks on Russian energy facilities have raised questions about the country’s ability to maintain diesel exports. A drone strike reportedly disrupted operations at Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery, further increasing concerns about international fuel availability.
Market analysts believe these geopolitical risks could continue supporting higher oil prices. However, the extent of future increases will depend on supply conditions and developments in ongoing conflicts.
To ease pressure on global markets, the International Energy Agency agreed to release more than 20 million barrels of fuel. In addition, the United States announced plans involving an exchange of up to 17 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Despite these measures, uncertainty surrounding major oil-producing regions continues to influence market sentiment and raises concerns about energy costs worldwide.
