North Korea has test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles as Pyongyang continues to strengthen its naval capabilities and expand its weapons programme.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missiles were launched on Wednesday, October 14, in waters off North Korea’s eastern coast. State media reported the tests on Thursday, October 15, describing them as an effort to assess underwater combat systems and improve the Navy’s ability to conduct strategic missions.
North Korean officials said the exercises demonstrated the reliability of the country’s military deterrent. However, authorities did not disclose detailed technical specifications or provide comprehensive information about the missiles’ performance.
Senior military officials reportedly observed the launches. South Korea’s military also monitored the tests and assessed the missiles’ flight activities.
The latest launches highlight North Korea’s continued efforts to develop a credible sea-based strategic deterrent. Submarine-launched cruise missiles could strengthen its ability to conduct attacks while making launch platforms more difficult for adversaries to detect.
Meanwhile, tensions between North and South Korea have intensified following a series of missile tests by both countries. Pyongyang has also conducted ballistic missile launches in recent weeks, while Seoul continues developing advanced weapons systems.
Diplomatic relations between North Korea, South Korea and the United States remain strained. The latest missile tests could further complicate regional security efforts as Pyongyang continues prioritising military modernisation.
