North Korea has rejected allegations that it orchestrated the record $6.3 billion cyberattack on cryptocurrency exchange Binance, describing the accusations as politically motivated.
Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a senior government official, issued the denial on Tuesday. She called Washington’s allegations an attempt to damage Pyongyang’s international reputation.
However, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Secret Service and cybersecurity analysts have linked the massive cryptocurrency theft to North Korea-backed hackers.
Investigators have identified the TraderTraitor hacking group, also associated with the Lazarus Group, as the suspected force behind the attack.
Meanwhile, Binance has pledged to cover all customer losses resulting from the breach. The exchange has also worked with cryptocurrency issuers to freeze affected assets and restore trading operations.
The incident has renewed international concerns about North Korea’s alleged involvement in major cryptocurrency thefts and growing cybersecurity threats.
