North Korea has demanded that South Korea demonstrate the “utmost respect” if it genuinely wants to restore relations between the two countries. Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued the remarks on Thursday.
Her statement followed a dispute over a landmine explosion inside the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which injured three South Korean soldiers last month. Pyongyang has denied responsibility for the blast, despite accusations from Seoul and the United Nations Command.
Tensions Rise After DMZ Mine Explosion
The South Korean military demanded an official apology from Pyongyang last week and described the incident as a violation of the 1953 Armistice Agreement. However, South Korea’s civilian leadership has also called for renewed dialogue with the North.
Meanwhile, Seoul and the US-led United Nations Command maintain that North Korean mines caused the explosion on the South Korean side of the border. The DMZ remains a heavily mined buffer separating the two countries under the armistice.
Kim Yo Jong said South Korea must carefully consider its words and actions if it wants to improve bilateral relations. She also called for consideration and sincerity toward North Korea during any future efforts to rebuild ties.
Pyongyang Sets Conditions for Better Relations
North Korea’s latest statement signals that Pyongyang expects Seoul to change its approach before meaningful dialogue can resume. In particular, the North wants South Korea to show greater respect and sensitivity toward its position.
The demand comes as tensions remain high along the heavily fortified border. Nevertheless, Seoul’s continued calls for dialogue could provide an opportunity for both sides to reduce tensions if they agree on conditions for future engagement.
The latest dispute highlights the fragile nature of relations between the two Koreas and the challenges facing efforts to restore communication.
