The UK government plans to introduce new online safety measures requiring older teenagers to limit social media use during overnight hours. The proposal aims to improve sleep, support education, and reduce the harmful effects of excessive screen time.
If approved, the new rules will apply to teenagers aged 16 and 17.
Default Overnight Restrictions for Teen Users
Under the proposed regulations, social media platforms will automatically block access between midnight and 6 a.m. for affected users.
Teenagers will still have the option to change the default setting if they choose to access social media during those hours. In addition, platforms will disable features designed to encourage continuous scrolling by default.
The government believes these changes will help young people develop healthier online habits.
Government Focuses on Online Safety
The proposed measures come shortly after plans to introduce a broad social media ban for children under the age of 16.
Officials say the latest restrictions are designed to protect teenagers from the negative effects of excessive social media use on their mental and physical well-being.
Technology Minister Liz Kendall said, โThese measures will be crucial in helping young people get the sleep they need, focus on school and college, and spend more quality time with family and friends.โ
Tech Companies Face Legal Responsibility
The government also plans to require social media companies to implement the overnight curfew and strengthen age verification systems.
Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan said, โWeโre forcing the tech companies to do it.โ
He added that companies must carry out more effective age checks. Otherwise, they could face strict regulatory penalties for failing to comply with the new rules.
Mixed Reactions to the Proposal
The proposed restrictions have sparked debate among policymakers.
Critics argue that allowing teenagers to disable the curfew may reduce its effectiveness. Some believe the government should either fully restrict social media access for this age group or avoid introducing measures that users can easily bypass.
Supporters, however, view the proposal as a practical step toward encouraging healthier digital habits without imposing a complete ban.
New Rules Expected in 2027
The UK government plans to present the first set of online safety regulations to Parliament by the end of the year.
If approved, the measures are expected to take effect in spring 2027.
The proposal follows growing international efforts to strengthen online safety for young people. Several countries have introduced stricter digital regulations as concerns continue to grow over social media’s impact on children’s mental health, sleep quality, and overall well-being.
