In a tragic incident, nine people, including seven members of a family, died after collision of two vehicles in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahsa governorate.
According to Saudi media, the victims in one vehicle included a husband, his wife, three sons and two daughters.
Meanwhile, two young men travelling in the second vehicle also died in the crash.
The Eastern Province Traffic Department said the accident occurred after one vehicle suddenly swerved, causing it to collide with the other vehicle.
Emergency teams, including Civil Defence and Saudi Red Crescent personnel, reached the scene and worked to rescue people trapped inside the vehicles.
The crash occurred on the Al-Uqair-Al-Uyun road, which connects Al-Ahsa with areas along the Eastern Province’s coastal region.
However, authorities have not released the identities of those killed or provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the sudden manoeuvre.
The fatal accident comes as Saudi authorities continue efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related deaths across the kingdom.
According to the Ministerial Committee of Traffic Safety’s 2025 annual report, road fatalities dropped by more than 60% between 2016 and 2025.
The report identified failure to maintain a safe following distance as the leading reported cause of road accidents, accounting for 29.2%.
Meanwhile, sudden swerving accounted for 27.9% of reported accidents during the period.
Saudi authorities have linked the decline in fatalities to improved road infrastructure, expanded traffic-monitoring technology and faster emergency response.
Nevertheless, the Al-Ahsa crash highlights the continuing dangers faced by motorists across Saudi Arabia.
Sudden manoeuvres remain among the leading reported causes of road accidents, according to official traffic safety data.
