NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to investigate some of the universeโs biggest mysteries. The roughly $4 billion observatory is scheduled to launch Sunday from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
The mission will study dark energy, dark matter and the expansion of the universe while also searching for planets beyond our solar system. NASA officials said the launch will take place nine months earlier than originally planned.
Roman Telescope to Expand Cosmic Research
Roman will follow the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope, both of which continue to operate. Its wide view and rapid surveying capabilities will allow scientists to examine huge areas of space more efficiently.
Scientists expect the telescope to study the structure, composition and evolution of the cosmos. Its surveys will also help researchers investigate how gravity operates across vast distances.
Mission Could Transform Understanding of Universe
Romanโs main survey will take more than a year and could examine more than two billion galaxies. Scientists will use the data to study how stars, galaxies and galaxy clusters formed and evolved.
Julie McEnery, Romanโs senior project scientist at NASAโs Goddard Space Flight Center, said the telescope could help researchers find rare and unusual objects. She added that its observations could provide clues about the nature of dark matter, dark energy and the universe itself.
The observatory will also contribute to the search for exoplanets. Consequently, researchers expect Roman to expand humanityโs understanding of both distant worlds and the wider cosmos.
