ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the Netherlands have explored new opportunities to strengthen bilateral trade, investment and business cooperation across several economic sectors, including textiles, information technology, agriculture and engineering.
The discussions took place in Islamabad during a meeting between Pakistani officials and a visiting Dutch business delegation led by Merlin Melles. Both sides emphasised the importance of closer business contacts, joint ventures and partnerships to translate commercial interest into tangible investments.
Dutch Ambassador Robert-Jan Siegert said the Netherlands is Pakistan’s second-largest export destination within the European Union, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $1.9 billion. He also called for increased Dutch exports and investment in Pakistan.
The talks highlighted opportunities in agricultural processing, dairy production, sustainable technologies, food processing and value-added manufacturing. Officials noted that Dutch technical expertise could complement Pakistan’s production capacity and growing industrial base.
Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul, who hosted a business dinner for the delegation, stressed the importance of direct engagement between companies to identify commercially viable opportunities.
During the visit, Dutch business representatives toured Pakistani companies, including Systems Limited, as well as textile and industrial facilities in Karachi. Delegates praised Pakistan’s industrial capabilities, professional expertise and business environment.
The Commerce Ministry also briefed the delegation on Pakistan’s trade relations with the European Union, the benefits of the GSP+ scheme and opportunities to diversify exports beyond traditional products.
Meanwhile, representatives of the Pakistan Software Export Board met Dutch entrepreneurs interested in software development, digital services and technology partnerships.
Several delegates also identified potential opportunities in remote professional services, engineering and specialised staffing, particularly through arrangements that connect Pakistani professionals with European businesses.
Officials said stronger private-sector engagement could help expand bilateral commerce, encourage investment and create new avenues for cooperation between Pakistan and the Netherlands.
