Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied reports of a confrontation with military chief Eyal Zamir over a proposed operation linked to Iran, just days before Israel’s parliamentary election.
According to Israeli broadcaster Channel 12, Zamir sought further discussions and signed legal authorisation from political leaders before carrying out the instructions. However, the report did not disclose the operation’s nature or intended target.
The report also raised concerns among military officials that the proposed action could trigger a rapid confrontation with Iran. Furthermore, some officials reportedly feared that political leaders could use rising tensions for electoral advantage.
Netanyahu rejected the claims during an interview with Israel’s Channel 14 on Sunday. “There is no confrontation,” he said.
Iran Tensions Raise Security Concerns
During the same interview, Netanyahu said he had instructed Israel’s military and Mossad intelligence agency to work towards toppling Iran’s government. Nevertheless, Channel 12 did not establish whether these instructions were connected to the undisclosed operation.
Netanyahu also claimed that Iran had resumed its nuclear programme. He presented the issue as a major concern for Israel’s security ahead of the October 27 parliamentary vote.
Meanwhile, he shared an AI-generated image depicting a nuclear explosion over Tel Aviv, warning about the potential consequences of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
Opposition Leaders Criticise Netanyahu
The image drew criticism from opposition politicians Gadi Eisenkot and Yair Golan. They accused Netanyahu of spreading fear and panic shortly before voters head to the polls.
Political officials also rejected allegations that the Iran issue was being used for electoral purposes, according to Channel 12.
The reported disagreement has intensified scrutiny of Israel’s political and military leadership during a sensitive period. However, the details of the proposed operation remain undisclosed, and Netanyahu continues to deny any clash with Zamir.
With the election approaching, developments involving Iran remain a major focus of Israel’s security debate.
