On Friday, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) announced a Rs1.75 per unit increase in electricity tariffs as part of the fourth quarterly adjustment. This change will be reflected in electricity bills for the months of September, October, and November.
The authority has forwarded this decision to the federal government. The third quarterly adjustment for the fiscal year 2023-24, which concludes in August, raised the tariff by Rs0.93 per unit. In addition to this, consumers will see an extra Rs0.82 per unit in their September bills as part of the ongoing quarterly adjustment.
In a related decision, NEPRA also approved a Rs0.37 per unit reduction in the fuel charge adjustment for July. This approval followed a hearing held on August 28, where the fuel price adjustment for the previous month was discussed.
Consumers will experience some relief in their upcoming bills. The fuel charge adjustment for June had added Rs2.56 per unit to the bills issued in August. However, for September, this will be offset by a Rs2.93 per unit reduction in the fuel price adjustment.
When both the quarterly tariff increase and the fuel charge adjustments are combined, consumers will see a net relief of Rs2.11 per unit in their September electricity bills, according to NEPRA.
This combination of adjustments is aimed at balancing the costs for consumers as NEPRA navigates the changing fuel prices and regulatory requirements for electricity tariffs across the country.
