ISLAMABAD — The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs1.50 per unit in the average base electricity tariff, a move that is expected to bring relief to electricity consumers amid soaring inflation.
According to NEPRA officials, the revised multi-year tariff has been set at Rs34 per unit and the authority has sent its decision to the federal government for final approval. The reduction, however, will only be implemented if the government agrees to provide the necessary subsidy to cover the difference.
Sources in the power ministry say that the government is expected to issue an official notification in the coming days, after which the new electricity rates will be enforced nationwide.
The tariff cut is part of a broader strategy to ease the financial burden on households and industries struggling with rising living costs. NEPRA officials noted that the adjustment reflects efforts to rationalize electricity prices and pass on the benefits of improved power sector efficiency to the end users.
Government insiders confirmed that discussions on the required subsidy are in the final stages and the decision is expected to be announced soon to ensure that consumers benefit from the reduced rates in upcoming billing cycles.
If formally notified, this would be one of the most significant base tariff reductions in recent months, potentially impacting millions of domestic and commercial electricity users across Pakistan.
