The death toll from devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 781, according to the country’s disaster authority. Meanwhile, 2,502 people remain missing as rescue teams continue operations for a fifth consecutive day.
The disaster struck areas near Nepal’s border with China, leaving a large number of people unaccounted for. Nepal’s disaster authority said rescue efforts were continuing as officials worked to determine the fate of missing people.
The latest figures also include hundreds of foreigners and workers involved in hydropower projects.
Nepal Reports 2,502 Missing People
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 2,502 people missing. The disaster agency separately listed 1,910 missing citizens in an update issued on Sunday.
The missing list also includes 592 foreigners whose whereabouts remain unknown. In addition, 933 workers on hydropower projects along the affected river are listed as missing.
The torrent crashed through areas where hydropower projects were operating, adding to the scale of the disaster.
Rasuwa Among the Hardest-Hit Areas
The disaster has particularly affected the district of Rasuwa, where hundreds of people remain unaccounted for. According to the latest update, 562 people are missing in Rasuwa. The figure makes the district one of the worst-affected areas in the disaster.
Meanwhile, rescue efforts have continued as authorities work through the affected areas and update missing-person figures. The authorities are still dealing with a large number of unaccounted people as operations enter their fifth day.
Tibet Reports Additional Deaths and Missing People
The disaster has also caused significant casualties across the border in Tibet. Chinese state media confirmed 16 deaths in Tibet following Wednesday’s disaster. It also reported 546 people missing in the affected area.
When combined with Nepal’s reported figures, the overall toll reaches 797 deaths and 3,048 people unaccounted for.
However, the figures from Nepal and Tibet reflect separate national reporting.
The combined numbers provide a broader picture of the disaster’s impact across the affected region.
Bodies Recovered in India
The disaster’s impact has also extended into India. Indian authorities said they had recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal.
The recovered bodies are believed to belong to people affected by the floods. However, these seven deaths have not been included in Nepal’s reported death toll.
The recovery of bodies in India has nevertheless added another dimension to the disaster unfolding across the region.
Rescue Efforts Continue
Rescue operations in Nepal have now entered their fifth day as authorities continue searching for missing people. The large number of people still unaccounted for has added urgency to the ongoing efforts.
Among those missing are Nepalese citizens, foreign nationals, and hydropower workers. Rasuwa remains one of the hardest-hit districts, with 562 people still listed as missing.
At the same time, authorities continue updating their figures as information becomes available from affected areas. The disaster has also affected areas beyond Nepal, with deaths and missing people reported in Tibet.
India has separately recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal, although those deaths remain outside Nepal’s official toll.
For now, Nepal’s disaster authorities continue their efforts to locate those still missing and assess the full impact of the floods.
With 781 deaths reported in Nepal and 2,502 people still missing, the scale of the disaster remains severe as rescue operations continue.
