ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a critical alert regarding an impending spell of heavy rainfall expected to hit various regions of Punjab from Monday through Wednesday. The advisory, based on a detailed weather forecast from the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), warns that the already precarious flood situation may worsen, particularly across northeastern, central, and southern Punjab.
According to the alert, numerous districts across the province are likely to experience intense rainfall, significantly increasing the risk of flooding. Areas identified as high-risk include Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Murree, Jhelum, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, and Hafizabad. These districts are especially vulnerable due to their proximity to rivers and hill torrents that could swell rapidly under the forecasted conditions.
In addition, several other districts such as Chiniot, Lahore, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Layyah, and Mianwali are also on high alert. Southern parts of Punjab, including Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan, may face worsening flood scenarios due to increased river flows and continued downpours.
One of the critical points of concern is the Marala Headworks, where elevated river discharge and rainfall in upstream regions could lead to flood surges. Authorities have warned that any rise in water levels at this location could result in severe inundation of the surrounding low-lying regions.
Residents living near riverbanks, canals, and low-lying areas have been strongly advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and evacuate to safer areas if needed. The NDMA and NEOC have also urged local authorities, emergency responders, and the general public to take all necessary precautions and follow official advisories to minimize the risk to life and property.
The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as the weather system develops over the next several days.
