The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned journalist Asad Ali Toor over allegations of spreading false information. The agency issued the notice on Wednesday under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
According to the notice, the state filed the complaint against Toor. The inquiry relates to the alleged dissemination, transmission, or public exhibition of false information.
Inquiry Scheduled Under PECA Provisions
The NCCIA directed Toor to appear at its Cybercrime Reporting Centre in Islamabad. He has been asked to attend the inquiry at 11am on July 31.
The agency warned that failure to appear without a lawful excuse would allow the inquiry to continue in his absence. Moreover, it stated that non-compliance could attract action under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Following the notice, Toor shared the document on X. He also posted verses by renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz alongside his response.
Press Club Raises Concerns Over Notice
Meanwhile, the National Press Club (NPC) condemned the NCCIA’s action. It expressed concern over the state of press freedom in Pakistan.
The NPC said freedom of expression is a constitutional right. Furthermore, it argued that legal pressure against journalists could undermine democratic values.
The organisation urged institutions to act according to the Constitution, the law, and fundamental human rights. It also called for the withdrawal of the notice and respect for journalists’ constitutional protections.
Toor was previously arrested in 2024 under PECA over allegations of running a campaign against state institutions. However, authorities later released him.
