LAHORE / ISLAMABAD: Nawaz Sharif’s legal team submitted a recent medical report to the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday, just a few days before the anticipated return of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader to the country.

In November 2019, the Lahore High Court permitted the PML-N leader to travel abroad for urgent medical treatment, based on his medical reports. Following the court’s decision, he went to the UK and has been residing in London ever since. The court had instructed him to regularly submit medical reports.
Last month, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif announced that his elder brother would conclude his four-year self-imposed exile and return to Pakistan on October 21.
In a recent medical report submitted by Nawaz’s legal team, Professor Carlo di Mario from London’s Royal Brompton Hospital stated that he had been treating Nawaz Sharif, who had previously undergone coronary artery bypass grafting, multiple angioplasties, and ablations during his stay in London over the past years.
The cardiologist mentioned that they initially attempted medical treatment to strengthen his anti-anginal therapy. However, due to the worsening of his symptoms and confirmation of a large area of ischemia in a Rubidium PET myocardial perfusion scan, they decided to perform an angioplasty in November 2022, targeting an occluded left circumflex artery. This procedure involved rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy, and the deployment and expansion of multiple stents under IVUS guidance.
The report also noted that Nawaz Sharif still experiences some residual anginal symptoms and recommended continuous monitoring. This is necessary due to the presence of diffuse distal coronary disease in a patient with diabetes and several other comorbidities, which would require frequent follow-up investigations both in London and Pakistan.
