Turkish authorities have arrested a self-proclaimed prophet and several of his followers on charges of financial fraud

Turkish security officials have arrested a man who claimed to be a prophet, along with 15 of his followers, for financial fraud. Mustafa Çabuk, who referred to himself as “the Mahdi Awaited,” had formed a religious group in Çanakkale, reportedly attracting around 200 followers, according to both state and private media.

The government alleges that Çabuk and his close associates exploited religious beliefs for financial gain. They are expected to face charges of financial fraud once the investigation is concluded and they are presented in court.

Çabuk’s activities began in 2023 when he started renting hotels and homes, claiming to provide shelter for earthquake victims in Turkey. He later took to social media to share his beliefs, asserting that he had received divine signs.

Reports indicate that he encouraged his followers to sell their assets and take out loans, promising substantial returns, which led to significant online controversy. Many observers believe that his followers were misled, while some argue that those who willingly contributed funds should also bear some responsibility for their decisions.

In addition to confiscating funds from Çabuk and his followers, authorities also recovered weapons during the arrests, which took place on October 8. Çabuk faces charges of financial fraud and forming a criminal organization. Further reports reveal that he claimed to have received a vision regarding the location of the “Ark of the Covenant,” using these fabricated assertions to attract followers and secure significant financial profits.
