The Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday that UN Secretary-General António Guterres will travel to Pakistan on September 9 and 10 for a “solidarity” visit after the country was devastated by catastrophic floods.
“During his visit, Secretary General Guterres will meet with the Pakistani leadership and senior officials to exchange views on the national and global response to this calamity caused by climate change,” the FO said in a statement.
The districts hardest hit by the floods will be visited by the Secretary-General. Overseeing the United Nations’ humanitarian response work in support of the Government’s rescue and relief efforts for millions of affected people, he will contact displaced families and first responders on the ground.
The FO added that the visit by Guterres will help bring attention to the worldwide magnitude of the disaster, the number of lives lost, and the extent of the damage caused.
According to the UN, “it will contributeton enhancing commensurate and coordinated international response to the humanitarian and other needs of the 33 million impacted Pakistanis.”
The UN Secretary-General has lent his full support to the UN “Flash Appeal” to raise $160 million for Pakistan’s Flood Response Plan.
