All eyes on President Arif Alvi set to address joint session of parliament

President Arif Alvi is scheduled to address a joint session of parliament today as the final legislative year of the current National Assembly gets underway, according to Geo News.

Clause three of Article 56 mandates that the president address the legislature to explain the “causes of its summoning” following each general election and the first meeting of the legislative year.

If the NA isn’t dissolved sooner, this will be the parliamentary year with the fewest days because it will only last 310 days.

On August 14, President Alvi was scheduled to address the joint session. However, the event was postponed because of concerns from the coalition government.

However, sources told Geo News that during the president’s meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, all issues had been resolved.

On the other hand, sources informed The News that the president is anticipated to discuss the government’s success throughout the previous year while outlining the objectives for the coming one.

The fifth and final presidential address to the Parliament will be this one.

The first address by the president to the current assembly was delivered on September 17, 2018, followed by those on September 12, 2019, August 20, 2020, and September 13, 2021.

According to NA sources, the current lower house has passed a total of 156 measures, including private members bills. Ten of these measures were passed during the first parliamentary year, thirty during the second, sixty during the third, fifty-four during the fourth, and the final two during the fifth, which officially began on August 14, 2022.

During this time, a total of 122 legislation have been approved by the president and become Acts.
