Lahore/Islamabad : In a significant development, the parliamentary party of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has concluded deliberations and finalized candidates for the pivotal roles of speaker and deputy speaker in the Punjab Assembly.
Veteran PML-N leader Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, hailing from Lahore, has emerged as the party’s nominee for the esteemed position of speaker. With unanimous support from the parliamentary party, Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman is poised to assume the responsibilities of the speaker, bolstered by his extensive political experience and distinguished service to the constituency. Having secured victory for the fifth consecutive term from Lahore’s PP-148 constituency, Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman brings a wealth of expertise to the role, having previously held key ministerial portfolios including Excise & Taxation, Higher Education, School Education, Finance, Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education, and Transport. His familial lineage, with his father Mian Shujaur Rehman having served as Mayor of Lahore, further underscores his deep-rooted connection to the region and its governance.
In addition to the nomination for speaker, the parliamentary party of PML-N has endorsed MPA Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channer for the office of deputy speaker. Hailing from Bahawalpur, Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channer brings a wealth of legislative experience to the table, having been elected as MPA for the second consecutive term. His father, Malik Muhammad Iqbal Channer, has a storied political career, having served as an MPA for three terms and also held ministerial positions during the tenure of former Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
