PM Shehbaz Sharif Meets President Biden at Exclusive White House Reception

PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended a reception hosted by United States President Joe Biden, honoring the heads of government participating in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.

This reception served as a platform for world leaders to connect and discuss various global issues, and it marked the second time PM Shehbaz met President Biden, with their first encounter taking place during a similar event at the 77th UNGA session in 2022.

During the reception, both leaders exchanged good wishes, reflecting the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the United States and Pakistan. The gathering included heads of state from various countries, highlighting the significance of the UNGA and the collaborative efforts required to address pressing international challenges.

Before attending the reception, PM Shehbaz delivered a 21-minute address at the plenary meeting for the UN General Debate at the 79th UNGA in New York.

In his speech, he addressed several critical regional and global issues, including the disputes in Palestine and Kashmir, the ongoing war in Ukraine, climate change, and the rising levels of poverty and debt exacerbated by environmental challenges.

In his remarks about Kashmir, PM Shehbaz criticized India’s policies in the region, particularly the oppressive measures imposed in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He emphasized that the legacy of Burhan Wani continues to inspire the sacrifices and struggles of countless Kashmiris.

To achieve lasting peace, he urged India to reverse the unilateral and illegal actions taken since August 5, 2019, and to engage in dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister condemned the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, describing the situation as “systematic slaughter” and “bloodshed.” He called on the United Nations to advocate for a sustainable peace solution through the Two-State approach, aiming to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Additionally, PM Shehbaz highlighted the alarming rise of Islamophobia, manifesting through frequent desecrations of the Holy Quran, attacks on mosques, and acts of discrimination against Muslims.

He assured that Pakistan, alongside the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), would collaborate with the UN Secretary-General and his Special Envoy to implement an action plan to combat Islamophobia.

PM Shehbaz also called for an immediate end to the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to cooperating with African nations in countering terrorism and resolving regional conflicts, underlining the country’s role in UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts.

Overall, PM Shehbaz’s participation in both the reception and the UNGA session underscores Pakistan’s active engagement in addressing critical global challenges and advocating for peace, security, and human rights on the international stage.
