ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to attend a climate change conference being Co-hosted by Pakistan.
The Government of Pakistan and the United Nations will co-host the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva on January 9, 2023.
The prime minister telephoned the Emir of Qatar to express his gratitude for Qatar’s kind humanitarian assistance following Pakistan’s devastation by floods brought on by climate change earlier this year.
He recalled that Pakistan was currently dealing with the enormous challenge of rebuilding and rehabilitation in a way that was climate-resilient.
The prime minister emphasised that, while Pakistan tried to mobilise as many of its limited resources as possible, ongoing international assistance and solidarity were required to meet the enormous challenge of recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of affected areas, as well as to build resilience against future climate shocks.
The FIFA-2022 Football World Cup in Qatar set a new standard for successfully hosting international sporting events, and the prime minister congratulated the Emir on his achievement.
They briefly discussed other bilateral and global issues of mutual interest.
The event will bring together governments, leaders from the public and private sectors, and civil society to assist Pakistan’s people and government with rehabilitation and reconstruction following the devastating floods, as well as to strengthen the country’s climate resilience.
