Kashmir Resolution
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to use his influence to ensure the implementation of the UN Security Council’s resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
In a meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, the premier emphasized the right of self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as outlined in the relevant international resolutions.
He expressed serious concerns over the actions of the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). PM Shehbaz stressed the need for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute to ensure lasting peace and stability in South Asia.
The Prime Minister highlighted the deteriorating human rights situation in Kashmir, pointing to what he described as egregious actions by Indian authorities in the valley, including ongoing oppression of the local population.
The situation in Kashmir, he argued, threatens regional security and demands international attention and intervention to secure the rights of Kashmiris, including their right to self-determination.
PM Shehbaz also condemned the Israeli military operations in Gaza, accusing Israel of conducting a genocidal campaign against Palestinians. He called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions.
The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s support for the establishment of a viable, independent, and sovereign Palestinian state, in accordance with internationally recognized borders.
In addition to addressing these geopolitical conflicts, the Prime Minister raised concerns about the growing tide of Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims worldwide. He called for global efforts to combat this rising trend and protect the rights of Muslim communities in various parts of the world.
PM Shehbaz also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to contributing to international peace and security, highlighting the country’s role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term.
He expressed Pakistan’s continued support for UN peacekeeping missions, a contribution that Guterres acknowledged and praised. The Secretary-General thanked Pakistan for its active engagement with the United Nations and its significant role in global peacekeeping efforts.
The Prime Minister welcomed the initiative of the UN Secretary-General to organize the “Summit of the Future.” He expressed hope that the summit would help developing countries bridge the financial gap needed to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and meet climate-related targets.
The premier highlighted the importance of international collaboration in tackling these challenges and stressed the need for support from developed nations.
On a separate note, PM Shehbaz attended a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations. The event was hosted by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, on the sidelines of the UNGA session.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by key ministers, including Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Education Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
During the ceremony, PM Shehbaz and Dr. Yunus engaged in a positive discussion about expanding bilateral relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Both leaders expressed a desire to promote cooperation in various fields, signaling a willingness to strengthen ties between the two South Asian nations.
PM Shehbaz arrived in New York on Monday for the 79th session of the UN General Assembly as part of his five-day official visit to the United States. His address to the UNGA is scheduled for Friday, where he is expected to further elaborate on Pakistan’s foreign policy priorities and key international issues.
