Pakistan’s security is not possible without strong economy: Former NSA advisor Dr. Moeed Yusuf

Dr. Moeed Yusuf, a former national security adviser, warned that Pakistan would not be able to secure “military security or human security” without ensuring a strong economy on Thursday. He emphasised the importance of strengthening the nation’s economy by generating and maintaining robust economic growth.

The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), a government-funded think tank, hosted a seminar on “Significance of National Security Policy in the Changing Geo-Political Situation” when Dr. Yusuf delivered his remarks.

Dr. Yusuf was crucial in developing Pakistan’s first national security strategy, which was unveiled in January. For the “safety, security, dignity, and prosperity” of the people, the policy encouraged the pursuit of “comprehensive national security,” which includes economic, human, and traditional security.

Due to a growing current account deficit and soaring inflation, Pakistan’s economy has been in a serious crisis. The IMF loan programme was supposed to resume in order to stop the downward trend, but the country’s devastating floods have dashed any prospects for an economic recovery.

The previous NSA noted Pakistan’s lack of foreign reserves. “We need to raise $30 to $35 billion to be sustainable. We cannot have a separate foreign policy because of this gap, he insisted.

He thought that raising investments, creating skilled labour, and luring foreign direct investment may all help the issue.

The world was in a state of flux, according to Dr. Yusuf, which has increased the need for economic stability.

In this chaotic world, “we have to attain economic stability,” he insisted.

As the nation moved from a condition of food security to one of food insecurity, the former NSA was concerned that things would get worse.
