NAB not to challenge Maryam Nawaz, Safdar’s acquittal in Avenfield case

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided not to challenge PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and her husband retired Capt Safdar’s acquittal in the Avenfield graft case.

Director-General of the National Accountability Bureau, Farmanullah has approved the decision not to challenge their acquittal in Rawalpindi.

The anti-corruption watchdog has also issued a written order.

The sentences given to Maryam Nawaz and her husband in the corruption case were overturned by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in September of last year.

Since the PML-N vice president did not hold public office, Justice Amir Farooq had stated during the hearing that the NAB could not bring assets beyond the case of the mean against her.

He claimed that the court exonerated the PML-N leader and her husband of the charges because the NAB had failed to establish the elements of the Avenfield case against them.

The accountability court fined Maryam two million pounds and sentenced her to seven years in prison in July 2018. Safdar received a one-year prison term.

After being later granted bail, the couple appealed their conviction in the IHC.

Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the PML-N, received a 10-year prison term in the Avenfield case.
