ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) -Pakistan confirmed the passing of its senior leader, Kunwar Naveed Jamil, following an extended period of illness. He was 59 years old.
Kunwar Naveed Jamil had been receiving medical treatment at a private hospital in Karachi for several months due to a brain hemorrhage.
Born on March 15, 1964, in Karachi’s Azizabad area, Jamil was elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1990 and later as a member of the provincial assembly in 2002.
In 2005, he resigned from his provincial assembly seat and assumed the position of mayor of the Hyderabad district.
In the 2015 by-elections, he was re-elected as a Member of the National Assembly, defeating the then-Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Imran Ismail.
He once again secured a position in the Sindh Assembly during the 2018 elections.
Jamil, who also held the post of MQM-P’s deputy convener, fell ill in 2022.
Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the head of MQM-Pakistan, expressed his condolences, stating that Jamil was a “rare asset” and a senior leader of the movement. Siddiqui added that Jamil’s contributions to the party and the country would always be remembered.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and former chief minister Murad Ali Shah also conveyed their sadness over the demise of the MQM-Pakistan leader.
The funeral prayers for Jamil will be held at 1.30pm on Friday at Mustafa Mosque in DHA Phase 1 of Karachi. The MQM-Pakistan announced that he will be laid to rest in the DHA Phase 8 graveyard.
