ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faces a surge in terrorist attacks, with the latest being the fourth in 48 hours. In Peshawar, authorities foiled another attack on a check post as militants targeted the Riaz Shaheed Police Post in the Sarband area.
The province has witnessed increased terrorist activities since the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) ended its ceasefire with Islamabad. The police’s vigilance helped thwart the latest attack, which marked the 665th terrorist attack this year.
Prior to this incident, suicide bombers targeted a compound in Bara Bazar, resulting in the martyrdom of four policemen and ten others, including civilians. Another attack occurred in the Regi area of Peshawar, where two policemen were killed and two others injured in a firing incident.
The rising militancy has led the Pakistani government to caution Afghanistan against providing safe havens to the banned TTP, as the availability of sanctuaries in Afghanistan is affecting Pakistan’s security
Terror activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have increased by 79% in the first half of 2023, according to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
KP’s interim Information Minister emphasized that the police are equipped to handle the rising terrorism but also stressed the importance of actions taken by the Afghan government to curb militancy. He believes that peace in Afghanistan will contribute to peace in Pakistan and any involvement in cross-border terrorism should be addressed within Afghanistan’s borders.
