Balochistan continues to experience a flour shortage as the cost of a kilogramme of flour has risen to between Rs120 and 125m.
Details indicate that while the product was not readily available in the majority of stores around the province, flour costs have risen in Quetta and other areas of Balochistan. A 20-kg bag of flour was currently going for Rs2,450 in the neighbourhood market.
The price of a 50-kg bag of flour in the neighbourhood market ranges from Rs5,900 to 6,000. The provincial government is unable to keep the price of flour from skyrocketing.
On September 13, the provincial government was accused of being to blame for the province’s ongoing flour shortage by the proprietors of flour mills, who said that the food department had not been able to obtain enough wheat for this year.
Representatives of the Balochistan chapter of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) claimed that the issue was caused by a substantial disparity between supply and demand.
They claimed that the proprietors of flour mills were being held responsible for the crisis when, in fact, the provincial government had put a regional and district-wide ban on the movement of wheat during the harvest.
