The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to withhold notifications declaring Ali Amin Gandapur as the winner from national and provincial seats in Dera Ismail Khan. Gandapur, a former provincial minister and a candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was set to become the party’s nominee for the post of Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the party’s stronghold.
The ECP’s decision comes despite Gandapur securing a significant number of votes in the elections. According to Form 47 issued by the ECP, Gandapur emerged victorious from DI Khan’s NA-44 constituency with 93,443 votes. Additionally, he also won from PK-113 with 35,454 votes. Notably, he clinched both seats as an independent candidate as the bat symbol, typically associated with PTI, had been denied to the party by the ECP.
While Gandapur’s victory was apparent from the voting results, the ECP’s decision to withhold the notifications raises questions about the validity or legality of the electoral process in those constituencies. It suggests that there may be ongoing scrutiny or investigations into the electoral proceedings or potential irregularities.
Meanwhile, the ECP has issued notifications for 36 out of the 44 constituencies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where elections were held for the national assembly. Additionally, notifications have been issued for 92 out of 115 provincial assembly seats.
Under the electoral rules, independent candidates like Gandapur are permitted to join a political party within three days of their victory being officially notified by the ECP. This provision allows independents to align themselves with political parties, thus potentially influencing the dynamics of government formation and the balance of power within legislative bodies.
The decision to withhold Gandapur’s notifications reflects the complexities and challenges inherent in the electoral process, particularly in a system where independent candidates often play a significant role in shaping political outcomes. It underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to electoral regulations to uphold the integrity and credibility of the democratic process.
