The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee is scheduled to convene in Islamabad today to determine the sighting of the Shawwal moon, thereby establishing whether Eid ul Fitr will be observed on Wednesday or Thursday.
The committee, chaired by Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, will gather atop the Federal Secretariat’s Kohsar Block in Islamabad. Concurrently, zonal and district committees will assemble at their respective headquarters.
Comprising members from various institutions such as the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), the committee’s decision will dictate whether Eid ul Fitr falls on April 10 or April 11, contingent upon the moon sighting.
Eid ul Fitr holds immense significance in the Islamic calendar, marking the culmination of a month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide.
Earlier, the federal government declared Eidul Fitr 2024 holidays starting from April 10, which is Wednesday, as per the official notification. Notably, several countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Australia are set to celebrate Eid on Wednesday.
Astronomically, the Met Office has indicated a possibility of moon sighting on Tuesday, with the weather forecast predicting partly cloudy to fair conditions across most parts of the country.
The committee has encouraged citizens to promptly report any moon sightings to the relevant committees in their respective areas.
