Educational institutions across Sindh will be closed on August 26

The Sindh government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on August 26 (Monday) to mark the Chehlum of Imam Hussain.

This decision, made by the provincial Education Department’s steering committee, recognizes the significance of this day in the Islamic calendar.

The Chehlum, observed on the 40th day following Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who fell in the Battle of Karbala.

This period of mourning honors Imam Hussain’s unwavering commitment and sacrifice, along with that of his companions, for the principles of justice and faith in Islam.

In addition to the general announcement for schools, the Department of College Education has also confirmed the closure of colleges across Sindh on the same date. This notification ensures that both primary and higher education institutions will be closed, allowing students and staff to participate in or observe the commemorative events as they see fit.

The Chehlum is a significant occasion for Muslims, particularly Shia communities, who participate in processions, gatherings, and special prayers to pay homage to Imam Hussain and his followers.

These events are marked by elaborate rituals and recitations that reflect the deep reverence for Imam Hussain’s stand against tyranny and oppression. The observance includes a range of activities such as reenactments of the battle, speeches highlighting the virtues of Imam Hussain, and collective expressions of grief and solidarity.

The holiday provides an opportunity for mourners to engage in these observances and reflects the government’s acknowledgment of the cultural and religious importance of the day.

Educational institutions will resume normal operations the following day, after the Chehlum observances have concluded.

Overall, the closure of educational institutions on August 26 underscores the profound respect for the Chehlum and allows individuals to fully engage in the commemorative activities associated with this solemn occasion.
