Azam Khan Swati, a senator for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), had his physical remand order extended for an additional four days by a local court in Islamabad.
Azam Swati was accused of defaming institutions in tweets, and senior civil judge Muhammad Bashir heard a case against Swati.
Babar Awan, Swati’s lawyer, argued during the proceedings that his client was in danger of losing his life and requested to be exempted from the proceedings.
As a result, the court authorised Azam Swati’s virtual appearance in the proceedings.
The Senator’s physical remand was however extended by the court until December 3.
The court also approved the senator’s Lawyer Babar Awan’s request not to present Swati in court due to security reasons.
Judge Bhatti said, “Azam Swati should not be produced before the court under further order.”
In the following hearing, according to him, Swati should be introduced to the court via a video link.
The FIA had requested a six-day physical remand of the senator in order to conduct additional investigations into his Twitter account and mobile phone.
