The Islamabad high court has officially dismissed a contempt of court appeal against Fawad Chaudhry, A senior Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf leader over his annotations against the state’s Judiciary. Justice Babar Sattar has disposed of the plea by declaring it ‘inadmissible’. The appeal submitted by attorney Saleem Ullah Khan included a transcript of a series of anti-judiciary statements made by Fawad Chaudhry.
According to the petition, Chaudhry made disparaging remarks against Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry. In his comments, the PTI representative claimed that Imran Khan cannot be punished in a case of contempt of court since he is a well-liked leader. He further said that ‘ Imran Khan’s statement is not against a judge only but the entire judiciary, including the chief justice of Pakistan’. This statement was read in front of the court at the outset of the hearing by the petitioner’s lawyer.
Justice Sattar dismissed the appeal by stating that “Political statements don’t constitute contempt of court. Nothing else will be there to do if [the court] keeps taking actions on such statements”.
