ISLAMABAD: The newly-renovated National Stadium in Karachi is set to be officially inaugurated tomorrow evening with a vibrant ceremony that will include fireworks and a stunning light show. Entry to the event will be free for the public.
In a statement, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi shared that the stadium’s reconstruction began on September 28, 2024, and was completed on January 31, 2025.
The pavilion building has been entirely demolished and rebuilt, with new seating installed in all enclosures. Naqvi highlighted that the stadium now boasts state-of-the-art LED floodlights, modern scoreboards, and an improved viewing experience due to the removal of fences.
Additionally, all hospitality boxes have been upgraded to enhance comfort for visitors. Naqvi commended the tireless work of the laborers and recognized the contributions of Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), National Engineering Services Pakistan (Nespak), contractors, and the PCB team in the renovation project.
The PCB Chairman emphasized that world-class facilities have been introduced for both spectators and players, especially in preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy. He assured that visiting teams will enjoy top-tier amenities during the event.
On X, Naqvi also announced that renowned Pakistani musicians Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Sahir Ali Bagga will perform at the inauguration ceremony.
The National Stadium’s opening follows the recent inauguration of Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which also underwent extensive renovations. Last year, the PCB launched a major upgrade project for both stadiums ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will feature matches at these venues, as well as the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
The first Champions Trophy match at Gaddafi Stadium will be held on February 22, showcasing a thrilling encounter between England and Australia. The eight-team tournament, which includes 15 matches, will begin on February 19 and conclude on March 9.
The teams are divided into two groups: Group A consists of Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, while Group B features Afghanistan, South Africa, England, and Australia.
Pakistan will host a total of 10 matches, with four matches—including all three of India’s group-stage matches and the first semi-final—being played in Dubai. The Champions Trophy final is scheduled to take place in Lahore, unless India qualifies, in which case it will be held in Dubai.
Meanwhile, the National Stadium in Karachi, along with Gaddafi Stadium, is also currently hosting the ongoing tri-nation series between Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa, which began on February 8 and will run until February 14.
