Leaders praise team’s discipline, teamwork and match-winning spirit in Rawalpindi final
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and several prominent political leaders lauded Pakistan’s cricket team on Saturday night after the Green Shirts clinched the T20I tri-series title at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Pakistan chased down a 115-run target in 19 overs, securing a six-wicket victory. Openers Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan laid a strong foundation with a crucial 46-run partnership, while Babar Azam and skipper Salman Ali Agha ensured the chase stayed on track. Babar finished unbeaten on 37 off 34 balls, sealing a confident win for the hosts.
In his congratulatory statement, President Zardari praised the team’s “hard work, discipline and high performance,” saying the players had made the country proud. He also acknowledged Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for displaying strong performances throughout the series.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the sentiments, commending Pakistan’s clinical cricket and appreciating the visiting teams for their participation. “Your discipline and skill have once again made the nation proud,” the premier said.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq highlighted the team’s “commendable teamwork,” while former finance minister Ishaq Dar called the current squad a “perfect build-up for the T20 World Cup.” Former batter Umar Akmal also applauded the squad for its consistency and composure.
Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka made a steady start, with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara adding 20 runs for the first wicket before Pakistan’s bowlers triggered a collapse — setting the stage for the hosts’ commanding win.
The tri-series victory has boosted national morale and renewed optimism ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming international assignments.
