Hollywood actor and producer Naomi Watts will receive a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival next month.
Festival organisers announced on Monday that the British-born Australian actress will receive the prestigious Donostia Award. The festival described Watts as one of the most talented and recognised actresses of her generation.
The 57-year-old actor first gained major recognition for her role in David Lynch’s 2001 psychological thriller Mulholland Drive. Since then, she has built a diverse career across independent films, auteur cinema and major Hollywood productions.
Two Oscar Nominations Highlight Career
Watts earned her first Academy Award nomination for her performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 21 Grams in 2003. She received another Oscar nomination for her role in Juan Antonio Bayona’s 2012 disaster drama The Impossible.
Her filmography also includes several acclaimed productions. These include Iñárritu’s Birdman, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.
Beyond film, Watts has also made her mark on television. She earned an Emmy nomination for her performance in Ryan Murphy’s miniseries Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. She also served as an executive producer on the project.
Watts Recognised Beyond Acting
In recent years, Watts has also used her public profile to raise awareness about women’s health. She has spoken openly about menopause and related health issues.
The Donostia Award will recognise her contribution to cinema and her wide-ranging career across film and television.
The award ceremony will take place on September 19 in San Sebastian. The city will host the San Sebastian Film Festival from September 18 to 26.
The festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious film events in the Spanish-speaking world. Watts will join the long list of major international film figures honoured with the festival’s lifetime achievement award.
