LAHORE: Actor Nadia Jamil has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take stronger action against animal cruelty, linking the issue to child welfare and societal well-being.
In an open letter co-signed with actor Uzma Hassan, Jamil argued that violence against animals contributes directly to broader social violence. Moreover, the letter highlighted Pakistanโs obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, stressing the need to protect children from psychological harm, including exposure to cruelty.
Citing a 2023 observation by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the appeal emphasised that children must be shielded from all forms of violence, including harm inflicted on animals. It added that such exposure can negatively impact emotional development by normalising brutality and weakening empathy.
Furthermore, the letter pointed to recent incidents, including a case in Gujranwala where sanitation workers allegedly mistreated a stray dog. It also raised concerns about increasing abuse of wild and domestic animals, including the exploitation of lions, monkeys and birds for entertainment and profit.
The appeal urged authorities to enforce humane policies such as sterilisation and vaccination for stray animals instead of violent methods. Additionally, it warned that unchecked cruelty could contribute to long-term behavioural issues, including domestic violence and broader criminal tendencies.
Jamil also encouraged the public to support the campaign by sharing the letter, calling it a step toward a more compassionate society.
Meanwhile, renowned actresses Ushna Shah and Zhalay Sarhadi earlier raised concerns about animal abuse and demanded stronger animal welfare measures in Punjab.
