Authorities have launched an urgent investigation after five children from the same family died under mysterious circumstances in the Takhti Khel area of tehsil Bakakhel, District Bannu, over the past three weeks. Meanwhile, three other children from the family remain ill and are receiving medical attention.
Following instructions from Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Fahim, District Health Officer Dr Zafar Iqbal Wazir formed a special medical board to determine the cause of the deaths. The board includes Dr Muhammad Arif, Dr Ataullah, Dr Muhammad Yasin, and Dr Muhammad Mehryar Khan. The team will examine the family’s health, living conditions, and all possible factors linked to the tragedy.
Health Teams Collect Evidence
A joint team from the Health Department and Halal Food Authority also visited the affected home. Local elders Malik Mamoon Khan Wazir and Chief Warden Civil Defence Masoom Wazir accompanied the officials during the inspection. Investigators collected food, water, and household samples for laboratory testing. In addition, they sent blood samples from the sick children and close relatives for detailed analysis.
Doctors investigating the case said the children’s symptoms closely resemble organophosphate poisoning. These chemicals are commonly present in agricultural pesticides and insecticides. Exposure can damage the nervous system and cause seizures, breathing problems, and heart complications.
Investigation Continues
Medical experts revealed that doctors advised the family to undergo specialized blood and urine tests after the first child’s death. However, the family did not immediately complete the recommended examinations. As more children died, officials recommended additional laboratory tests and post-mortem examinations.
Meanwhile, some local residents linked the tragedy to supernatural causes. However, authorities continue to focus on scientific evidence while awaiting laboratory results.
